Kitchen Lighting FAQs

Q: Should I only use recessed lighting in my kitchen?
A: As far as kitchen lighting goes, these days recessed lighting is perhaps the most popular. Rather than having your kitchen light fixtures stand out as the centerpieces of your room, you can use strategically-placed recessed light fixtures to make your counters, cabinets, architecture, art, or other such things stand out. However, as great as recessed lighting is, it is still a good idea to use pendant lighting or another type of lighting over your kitchen table or to use kitchen island lighting. Having just one, beautiful other source of lighting can add a lot of style to your kitchen.

Q: How can I make sure my kitchen light fixtures are environmentally friendly?
A: Be sure that you that you choose kitchen light fixtures that have a coefficient of utilization of at least 80%. You can also opt for lighting options that have an open top so that light will hit more places than just the ground, lighting up your kitchen with fewer lights (this is a good reason not to use as much recessed lighting). Also, be sure to use energy efficient light bulbs – they will end up costing both you and the environment less in the end.

Q: What are the main types of kitchen lighting?
A: There are three main types of kitchen lighting: task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting. Task lighting is used to focus light on a certain area, brightening up your kitchen counter, for instance, so that you can see your recipe and chop up your vegetables, etc. It is also good for pantries and small spaces. Ambient light is the overall, general light of the room. You need to make sure that you have good ambient light in your kitchen so that you can work safely. Accent light is very focused light that you can use to light up decorative plates, interesting architectural features, and kitchen art, etc.
